The Challenge
A platform built by the Intellect team to address a gap in the NZ consumer market — incumbent comparison sites are generic, affiliate-driven, and don't account for household-level context when making recommendations.
The problem we were asked to solve
Kiwis waste hours stitching together quotes from disconnected provider sites, with no neutral guidance and no easy way to see what their household actually pays compared to alternatives. Existing comparison sites rank generically by price alone and are built around affiliate revenue — not the household's actual situation.
Our Approach
How we tackled it
Mapped the NZ comparison market — identifying where incumbent comparison sites fail: generic price rankings, affiliate bias, and no household-level context when recommending plans.
Designed an AI recommendation layer that factors in household size, usage patterns, and life stage — giving recommendations that go beyond cheapest-by-default and account for what actually matters to the user.
Built data pipelines for live provider feeds across broadband, power, mobile, insurance, KiwiSaver, and mortgage products — maintaining accuracy without requiring users to export their own data.
Prioritised mobile-first UX for in-the-moment switching decisions — most comparison searches happen on mobile, often triggered by a bill arriving or a provider announcement.
